Statement
I have always been
fascinated with the tactile quality of anything I see. So, my portfolio
explores the textures that one encounters on a daily basis in Florida. Many of
my images show the textures of subjects close up, sometimes so close that the
objects become abstracted. If I go this generalized route, my portfolio will be
split into four categories of textures with nine photos in each category:
indoor, outdoors, food, and people. Indoor textures will include bedding,
carpets, tiles, walls, and possessions. Outdoors textures will include building
materials, plants, animals, rocks, and bodies of water. Food textures will include
snack foods, fruits, spices, and cooked meals. People textures will include
skin, nails, hair, eyes, and teeth. The more pictures I take, the more I
realize that the textures of cloth, plants, and skin interest me the most. I
also tend to lean towards views level with or from below the subject. I
especially enjoy close-ups of faces, of which I have only done a few because
I’m worried that they will clash with the rest of the images. Because of my
attraction to faces (eyes in particular), I’ve been playing with the idea of
changing my concept to people of Florida and their possessions, or the faces
and hands of different people of Florida, focusing on textures. I think hands
and faces (especially eyes) can tell you the most about a person without them
saying or doing anything. If I decide to go this route, I would probably use 18
different people with one close-up of their face and one of their hands for the
final portfolio. Or I will use 12 different people with one close-up of their
face, one of their hands, and one of a possession of theirs.
